Why can't someone stop the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico?

This is a major problem not only for the fisherman and wildlife, but the people living on land in this area. The atmosphere is filled with haze daily and there are oil smells from this spill in the air that go past New Orleans, north of the lake and beyond. If this keeps up, there may be possible health problems for thousands of people.
