Emergency! horses dieing of EEE! protection?
Endure by Farnam is very good. It is oil based and stays on, building up over time. It doesn't sweat off because it is oil based. I've used most brands and this one works. I spray it on them directly, and use a mitt to spread it over them. I also spray onto the mitt, and directly on them. I keep the mit in a covered coffee can which conserves the repellent on the mitt, and it builds up as I add more spray as needed. Get the plastic lined mitts made for this. Call your health department and see if they will supply you with briquettes that you put into any standing water, ponds, etc. they kill mosquito larvae before they can hatch. We used them during flooding here a few years ago and never had a problem. Our county health department provided them at no cost..They are very helpful in these situations, so you really should call them. Use face masks like the Cashel Crusader long nose fly mask with ears. and if you can provide fans in a shelter for them, it will keep the bugs off when they come in. Feed hay in the shelter with fans 24/7 to encourage them to come in. Drain any standing water you can, and get the briquettes from the county, or buy them and use them in the ponds around your property. Ask the health dept about fogging programs in your area and express your opinion in favor of it. Call your vet and see what advice is given there. Good luck.
