Can someone explain the meaning of Edgar Allen Poe poem's The Raven?

The big black bird is the narrator's guilty conscience. He's lost his lover, Lenore, and she ain't coming back...'nevermore.' The dang bird just sits up there on top of Athena and mocks him until madness overcomes.
