Why is it necessary to clean the magnesium strip before reacting it with hydrochloric acid?

This is because the formation of MgO Magnesium Oxide from oxygen gas forms a thin coating on the strip. So cleaning it removes this and the real reaction with only Mg solid can occur not with MgO.
